It was such a pleasure to be Kim and Craig’s wedding photographer at Cave Castle Hotel in Yorkshire last Saturday. It was a beautiful spring wedding, with cold wind but lots of sunshine and laughter to warm us up.

After Craig had been travelling through Australia for some time he came back for a short stay to his home village. The couple met through friends in their local pub, started dating and have been together ever since. Kim and Craig both love the Lake District and got engaged when they visited Keswick for Craig’s birthday and he proposed on the edge of Derwent Water. Kim said yes, as soon as she saw him on one knee, before he had even asked the question and they started planning their wonderful wedding day and to look for a wedding photographer!

Getting ready

The night before the wedding Kim stayed at Cave Castle hotel with her best friend and had her hair and makeup done at the hotel’s own spa. Afterwards I met them for some getting ready photos at her parents house to get dressed. As her parents own a garden centre in Yorkshire and have some animals I was greeted by lots of spring lambs, chickens and big happy dogs who I got some nice pictures of. What a lovely way to start the wedding day. Everyone seemed calm and happy and was fed with bacon and sausage sandwiches by Kim’s parents. My favourite part to photograph was both of Kim’s grandmothers helping her getting her wedding dress on and her dad seeing her for the first time. What special moments to capture in pictures. She wore a beautiful lace, mermaid like dress and looked absolutely stunning.

The wedding ceremony at Cave Castle Hotel

The ceremony took place in their local church in Holme on Spalding Moor on top of the hill overlooking the village where they both grew up. It was a beautiful church for photographing in as it was bright and lots of lovely light was flooding through the windows at that time of the day. They chose this church as Craig’s grandparents got married there and it is beautifully set.  It was a lovely ceremony, full of love and excited hand squeezes.

After the wedding ceremony, big hugs and congratulations, we did some family group photos. I got laughed at as I wrote my notes in my little tatty strawberry book which I gave Kim’s maid of honour so she knows who is in the pictures 🙂 Most people want group pictures but don’t want to spend too much time on them. I absolutely agree. I normally suggest no more than eight pictures on your wedding day so your cheeks have time to celebrate too :). It is easiest to round people up when everyone is still in one place. That’s why it often makes sense to do it after the ceremony. Afterwards we went for a little stroll round the church ground for some couple photos. This is such a great time for the newly married couple to have a bit of time alone and to let things sink in. The weather was fresh and sunny, it was a beautiful day. After that we headed straight to Cave Castle Hotel. Me in my old Skoda and Kim and Craig in their beautiful wedding car.

The reception

Kim and Craig chose to have their wedding at Cave Castle Hotel because they both really liked the historic feel, the grounds are beautiful for wedding photographs and it’s near their home. Cave Castle Hotel is an old country house, and it’s got such a romantic feel to it, especially in the gardens when the sun goes down.

Craig’s dad had organised some matching beards for him and his friends to surprise Craig on the wedding day. We had so much fun getting pictures of everybody wearing them. People chilled out having a drink at the bar and enjoying some sunshine. After a bit everyone sat down for the speeches which took place before the meal. Craig was really nervous about his wedding speech beforehand. In fact, the first time I met him he told me he was only going to say thank you for coming… What a surprise when he pulled out an absolutely lovely and heartwarming speech. He talked about Kim and his story and how much he loved her. Kim’s dad and Craig’s brothers speeches where super funny. I had to try very hard to keep the camera still whilst taking pictures.

The evening

After the meal was finished, we enjoyed another little walk in the grounds with the beautiful Cave Castle Hotel in the backround to catch the evening light. It was a really special time and we got some wonderful pictures along the shores of the little lake. The wedding reception room was turned around and the live band set up. I wasn’t there once they started playing but what I heard from the rehearsals I am sure they kept the party going all night long.

The whole wedding was so chilled and filled with laughter. Kim and Craig choose “Just you and I by Tom Walker” for their first song which I loved and made it extra special. One of the funniest moments of the wedding was the lads putting on their beards and me taking group pictures of them asking them to do a Kung Fu pose. This led to Craig being kicked in the bottom which made for an absolutely hilarious pictures sequence.

I asked Kim and Craig for some advice on the wedding planning and this is what they said:

If you’re planning your wedding, the biggest piece of advice is to be really organised, leave yourselves plenty of time to enjoy planning the wedding without it getting too stressful. Take full advantage of friends around you who have already planned a wedding, they are useful mines of information!
