“Our wedding photos are incredible and we love them! Thank you so much for everything. We genuinely cannot imagine how the wedding would have gone without you.” – Kim and James
I had the great pleasure of photographing the wedding of Kim and James on Saturday as their Wood Hall wedding photographer. It was such a relaxed and fun wedding and even the rain in the afternoon didn’t dampen the day!
Getting ready at Wood Hall
Kim got ready at Wood Hall Hotel with her bridesmaids, and the atmosphere was so calm. The sun was shining through the beautiful, old windows and the girls had Champagne whilst having their hair and makeup done. I had to explain why I kept disappearing to the bathroom as the window light was just wonderful for photographs of the wedding flowers, shoes and the gorgeous bride Kim. Once Kim’s mum helped her put her dress and and everyone was ready, the wedding party walked down the beautiful staircase at Wood Hall Hotel to get to the ceremony room. Kim was followed by her mum and four bridesmaids including her super cute niece Katie.
James got ready in York where he had stayed the night before the wedding with his best man and groomsmen (except one who decided he couldn’t bear the thought of sleeping on a blow up bed). I hear you! The groom travelled to the ceremony by car from York and arrived in good time to greet some guests and have a Bacardi breezer with his friends to calm the nerves.
Photographing the ceremony
The ceremony was a legal ceremony at the Wood Hall hotel’s own ceremony room. As it was my first time as Wood Hall wedding photographer it was a lovely surprise to see the room was decorated beautifully with white rose petals on the carpet and the wonderful wedding flower arrangement. During the ceremony they had two readings of dear friends including “Us two” by A. A. Milne. One of the funniest moments was when the best man got confused over the wedding rings and handed them out too early. The registrar had to call him back in front of everyone and told him off like a school boy!
The reception started out in the Rose Gardens of the Wood Hall hotel. They chose the Wood Hall hotel as their venue because they could have the place for the whole weekend and they just loved the countryside feel and the gorgeous historic rooms. It was a Yorkshire themed wedding with chocolate surprises including personalised Kitkats (I got one too. Yay!) as wedding favours and a blue and white theme amongst the wedding flowers.
I loved shooting at the Wood Hall hotel because the surroundings are completely stunning. The Hotel was built in 1790 as a country escape for a family and is now a stunning Hotel and Spa perched on a hill surrounded by rolling Yorkshire countryside. This means beautiful views and original fireplaces which makes for great wedding photos. What also made my life a lot easier as Wood Hall wedding photographer was the staff who were super-helpful and lovely including the DJ in the evening who let me adjust all the lighting conditions to my needs for the photographs of the cake cutting and the first dance.
And wedding surprises
After the starter James announced that in line with family tradition everyone had to find a new table to sit on so people got to know each other a little better. Kim thought he couldn’t pull it off, but with new seating plans to hand it worked out surprisingly well and I thought it was a great thing to do to mix things up. The cake cutting was another wedding photo highlight. They had a chocolate surprise cake which came with instructions on how to cut but these could not be found. We had to brave it and cut it and hope for the best. I think it is my favourite cake cutting wedding picture ever.
Natural and relaxed Yorkshire wedding photography at Wood Hall Hotel
The wedding day included drinks and garden games after the ceremony and a lego competition in the afternoon. A DJ supplied great sound for the evening disco to round it all off. One of my wedding photography highlights was when I told the bride and groom to try and smile in the confetti shots. First Kim got her shoe stuck in some cobbles and then James’s friends absolutely covered him in a whole bucket load of rose petal confetti. They decorated the venue with chocolate themed table cards, wedding flower arrangements, a home made photo wall and lego for the lego competition. After everyone finished eating, the judges (two of James’s friends), went round all tables asking each to give an improvised but highly detailed description of their lego art work before choosing a winner. It was hilarious!
The best man’s speech was fantastic and made everyone laugh so much. Especially when the best man announced at the end that James used to be in love with his mum. No one could hold it together.
Kim wore a gorgeous tight fighting but comfortable lace wedding dress and James wore a handsome blue suit and they looked just perfect. The couple met at Uni in Leeds and have been together for 11 years. They got in touch with me after a wedding fair in York where I first met them. We met for a drink and got on really well. I then didn’t hear from them for a whole year as they moved to Aberdeen and were really busy, so it was a lovely surprise to hear from them again and be able to photograph their wonderful Yorkshire wedding.
I hope you have enjoyed looking through their wonderful wedding photographs at Wood Hall Hotel.
